Sorry to keep you waiting :), so where was I....
So we haven't heard from Jessica in an hour, it's getting dark, and Bernie's drinks are really not strong enough to make this situation any better. We debate whether or not it's time to start panicking. We have been pretty rational up until this point, but now we've just about reached our threshold and we have no plan. We decide to email Jessica's boyfriend in Chicago, who responds quite promptly . Within minutes he has called Jessica and Jessica has texted us back that she is very very soon to leaving the airport. Since we know she is safe, all we can do is trust that she will be at the hotel soon.
FINALLY - almost 6 hours from when we first entered this debaucle, Jessica is in our arms! Literally!! We are so happy to see her. She is extremely exhausted, but we make her explain everything (except for the ridiculous details that she keeps focusing on that have nothing to do with how she got into this mess in the first place!)
Here is her explanation of what happened:
She arrives in Mexico City and has asked the flight attendant and several airport employees if she has to go to customs. Everyone tells her that she does not need to go through immigration here, but that she will go through it in Cancun. Her departing gate to Cancun is right next to her arrival gate in the same terminal, so all she has to do is walk over to her gate and wait for her flight. When she gets to Cancun, during baggage check they discover that she had not gone through customs when she first arrived in Mexico City. She is told she simply can't go through customs in Cancun and so an investigation/questionnaire/police documentation process ensues. Luckily, two other US citizens from LA were in the same predicament. They were Hispanic and spoke Spanish, so they were able to help Jessica understand everything that was happening. Jessica was escorted from place to place in this process with an entourage of cops around her lol. She had to give statements, fill out paperwork (I think there is record of her with the police in Cancun!), and answer questions in the hours and hours she was there.....all this for what became her most sacred possession- the stamp on her passport! What an ordeal!
